Joe Henley is the author of multiple books and guidebooks about Taiwan.
His latest novel, Migrante, tackles the subject of Southeast Asian
migrant workers in Taiwan, who work in Taiwan’s factories, in private
homes as caregivers, and on Taiwanese fishing boats.
The novel is based on several years’ worth of reporting Henley has done
on migrant worker rights for publications such as the Taipei Times and
the South China Morning Post, which highlights the many ways in which
these people are exploited by a labor brokerage system that is
systemically rigged against them, leaving the door wide open for them to
be taken advantage of physically, mentally, and economically.
Henley will deliver a talk on why, as Taiwan’s population both shrinks
and ages, a change not only in mindset, but in the labor brokerage
system itself, will be required if Taiwan is to remain dependent on the
Southeast Asian workforce to fill hundreds of thousands of jobs in
sectors that Taiwanese themselves deem undesirable.
